Kelly Prescott

I’ll never forget being on the air that day, last day of summer, 7 months ago.

It was a Friday night, I was doing the “Friday Night Kitchen Party” during my Afternoon Drive Show here at boom 99.7 in Ottawa.

We knew the weather was wobbly and we anticipated some potential “tornado warnings” in the area or — at least — a big thunderstorm.

We had just had some tornado warnings just a few days before, to no real effect, and as it is with human nature; people shrugged and went on with their days.

The kids at the Carp Fair continued to jam the lineups, and scream for the rides on their annual, and sanctioned, day away from school.

Parents allow them to skip off for the half price rides; something we found peculiar when we moved to Ottawa a decade ago.

So, back in the studio, as we do in this business; we watched the weather.

The radar looked pretty damn ominous to me.  I have never seen it look so angry.  There was a foreboding wall of it, illustrated in angry red, churning menacingly from Algonquin all the way down to the USA.

And then just around 5 pm the calls started pouring in; Dunrobin, Kinburn, Calabogie, Gatineau, Arlington Woods, Nepean.

We’d been hit with something usually reserved for the news or the movies.

So as our girls were part of the crowded gaggle of children at the Carp Fair (we had succumbed to the custom years ago) Daddy was now suddenly playing the information relaying radio announcer and concerned father all at the same time.

I told them to get home and stay together; advice they summarily choice to ignore.

My youngest got a lift home from her friends parents and had just arrived home.

Our 11 year old was by herself, in our basement, watching Netflix, unaware of what was happening 1 mile to the North of us!

Here is my story on what it is like to survive an EF-3 Tornado

Many neighbors lost their homes that day and if you drive through Dunrobin, our simple little 4 cornered hamlet….it’s pretty much unrecognizable.

It looks bombed out.

People are still displaced.  I have heard one family has rebuilt and returned and several others have only just begun the rebuilds.

We still have much to do.

And do we will.

We’re going to celebrate, we’re going to party and we’d like YOU to join us.

So many great stories come from stories, that aren’t so great.

It really seems like West Carleton is starting to get too specialized in disaster response!

But that’s the human spirit that exists in all of us in times of trouble.

The West Carleton Warriors (Pee Wee A) reminded us of that this winter by capturing the CHEVY GOOD DEEDS CUP and turning that $100,000 dollars over to West Carleton Tornado Relief.

With almost 70 homes destroyed, there is much to do.

7 months later and now the spring is revealing a whole new list of challenges.

We are all so lucky that we didn’t lose anyone.

It came very close several times and that is a modern day miracle right there!

So we prepare for action. we prepare to help and we prepare to celebrate.  Who said you can’t help — and have fun at the same time?!?

This all started with a small group of Dunrobin residence and Eagle Creek staff.  Regular people who brought this idea together and decided to go for it so that we can all give back to the families of Dunrobin.

And we would love to have you on Canada Day 2019 out at the beautiful Eagle Creek Golf Club as we combine forces to host this party for our families.

A day of fun, music entertainment, food, kids activities and a great display of fireworks provided by the “Dunrobin Community Association” with the assistance of many companies (including Minto, Richcraft, Access Rigging) which have been credited on the website, for all to see

VIP Packages are available and you can also sponsor a family.

A CLUBHOUSE VIP Package includes:

– Seating front and centre to the stage
– Free shuttle service throughout the day
– Buffet Dinner (a choice of 2 seatings )
– Access to the VIP Tent and outdoor bar
– Access to the Clubhouse washrooms and bar
